Mitch Robertson was a Hollywood screenwriter with a problem...

"When his cell phone rang, Mitch Robertson was in Penny’s Coffee Shop in Toluca Lake trying to figure out what to do with the chopped up body parts. Gone were the days when you could just scatter the severed limbs and torso all over the city, now with DNA the body would be reassembled almost immediately. And after 9-11 you couldn’t just get the neighbor kid to do a “penmanship exercise” making address labels, get some other kid to lick the stamps, box up the parts and drop them in a bunch of random blue mail boxes all over town to ship them to the far corners of the world - now packages had to be under sixteen ounces or you had to mail them from the post office... where they asked you all kinds of questions about the contents. You take your, what, about 190 pound man... that means you’d need to cut him into at least 200 pieces to keep it under the weight limits, and not only would that require a lot of work and weighing, think of all of the stamps and labels! Just too much trouble. If Mitch couldn't figure out how to dispose of the body parts he would be in big trouble. And that damned cell phone continued ringing."

Introducing Mitch Robertson in this novelette...

After reading Martell's Blue Books on scriptwriting, it was nice to read something fictional he wrote.

A bit short and left me wanting more, which is what any writer wants, actually.

A couple of things - I felt you needed more subtext in the dialog in the 2nd act, and that there wasn't a love interest for your protagonist. Why doesn't your hero have a love interest? A nice b-story at play, adding tension to the sudden assignment by a thinly disguised Major Burbank Studio's head. Yeah, anyone in the business will recognize Eisner & the Disney moronic guards.

It feels like a screenplay you turned into a novella. It could very well be expanded into a nice full book, with murder and a blonde to distract the hero.

Book caught my attention through being the only book featuring my name. Great writing for cheap. Relatively short however. But great above-average writing
Fast, funny read by a master writer. A real insider's look at the world of Hollywood screenwriting for those looking for a shortcut.
Interesting plot, but calling this a book is a stretch. It's just slightly longer than a short story, not long enough to call it a novella.
As a reader of Bill's blue books...an entire screenwriting curriculum in $3.99 increments...I was so pleased to finally get to read some of his straight-up novel writing.
Fun, edgy and full of colorful background on the sweaty, desperate world of writers in Hollywood...these adventures of Mitch, the screenplay detective, shouldn't be missed.
(I need to hire Mitch... since every piece of writing I ever sent to Hollywood went missing in action)
While I very much enjoyed the insider's view of the screenwriting business, the foreseeability of the twist ending undercut its impact--although I did like how it wrapped up. Several times minor gaffes which probably would not bother the typical reader--a word repeated too often, a comma misplaced or absent, a grammatical mistake--pulled me from the story.
The book is a page turner with plenty of twists, turns and laughs. I read it and immediatley searched kindle for more Mitch Robertson Mysteries, and when I couldn't find any, I read the book again. It reminded me of The Dexter books but with some of Vince Gilligans ( Breaking Bad) breakneck pacing and humor. Mr. Martell is a gifted storyteller and I can't wait for more.
I get a lot out of William Martell's books. He's a master of screenwriting techniques and I learn from each book. He has several books on for different genres. I'll re-read some of the texts, like his books where he dissects thrillers, or actions and you name it, he wrote about it. For me it's like taking a screenwriting class with little money. I'm glad he's still putting out the books.
